How to Maintain Good Posture for Better Spine Health

It is very important to maintain a healthy spine because it is the spine that ensures a healthy body and its function. The spine may however get injured or damaged when proper care is not taken of it. This causes a person to develop several spinal problems that if not taken care of may become very severe and cause several health issues.

One of the best ways to maintain a healthy spine is to maintain a good posture. Practicing good posture is one of the best ways to make sure that the spine stays healthy and strengthened. It is not mandatory that a good posture be maintained only when standing. In fact, it is essential to maintain a good posture when sitting as well as sleeping.

The following are a few tips to maintain a better posture for a healthier spine:
  • Standing: When standing, it is essential to stand straight and upright. When standing, one must make sure to put the shoulders straight in a relaxed position else the shoulders being to hunch which eventually puts pressure on the spine. It is also essential to tuck in the tailbone and tilt the pelvic bone forward a little which ensures that the health of the tailbone is maintained which is very essential for the spine.
  • Sitting: Sitting in the right manner is very important for the spinal health. When sitting, it is essential to sit in a manner that ensures that the buttocks are pressed against the backrest. The back of the knees must be placed at a little distance from the chair and the back must be straight when sitting for a good posture. It is also essential to place the shoulders straight and a chin level must be maintained so that one does not feel tired. Practicing this sitting position will make sure that one gets a healthier spine.
  • Sleeping: The way one sleeps also affects the health of the spine. When one sleeps in an awkward position the whole night, one tends to develop stiffness and pain in the spinal cord. It is essential not to use an over-sized pillow to sleep in a good posture. It is also better to sleep on the sides or the back rather than on the stomach as this puts strain on the spine.
