Causes of Back Pain

Back pains have become very common and we often hear every other person complaining of the same. The spinal cord forms the basic structure of the body and when it gets adversely affected, the result is a pain in the back, neck, shoulders, legs and other body parts associated with the spinal cord.

Most people consider back posture and lifting heavy weights as the cause of back pains. This is true to some extent but there are also many other causes of back pain which include the following:
  • Disc herniation: Disc herniation takes place when the soft, gel-like material of the disc bulges or leaks outward and causes irritation to the muscles and joints. A herniated disc results in severe pain in the legs and the lower back resulting in great discomfort.
  • Degenerative disc disease: Degenerative disc disease occurs when the spinal discs undergo wear and tear causing pain the back. This type of a disease results in chronic pain in the lower back leading to a lot of trouble for the person experiencing pain.
  • Osteoarthritis: Spinal osteoarthritis is the result of wear and tear of the facet joints of the spine. This results in excessive friction when one moves or bends the back resulting in severe pain in the back. This problem also results in stiffness of the spine leading to a lot of discomfort.
  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction: Sacroiliac joint joins the hip bones to the sacrum which is the triangular bone at the base of the spine. A problem in this joint and its functioning results in a severe back pain. This pain may even travel to the hips, pelvis and the legs.
  • Isthmic spondylolisthesis:  This problem occurs when one vertebral body slips over the one below it. This results in straining the disc as well as the joins of the spinal segment. This problem further results in severe pain in the lower back and the legs and may even cause stiffness and numbness in the spinal cord.
  • Spinal stenosis: Spinal stenosis occurs when the spinal cord narrows down because of a bone spur or a herniated disc. Spinal stenosis may result in a lot of pain in the lower back as well as the legs leading to nerve root irritation.
  • Spinal nerve compression: When a spinal nerve root is compressed or entrapped, it becomes inflamed and results in severe pain in the back and the legs. Spinal nerve compression is very common and may result in a lot of discomfort.
